Sometimes projects take on a life of their own and become something even better than I expected. Originally I had wanted to design a hat and scarf set using the same stitches as my Bronte Tee knitting pattern. I loved the look of the simple cabled stitches and how they created little off set ovals in a vertical design.
I got started with the scarf first and knew I wanted to include pockets on the front because who can resist a nice warm pocket on a cold winter’s day? I chose a width that would let me create large cozy pockets and as I stitched I realized it was taking up more yarn then expected. It also turned out a bit wider than I originally thought it would, but honestly I didn’t mind. The width is perfect for wrapping around your shoulders. The pockets hit right at the perfect spot for my hands too. I loved what a statement this piece became and didn’t want to overshadow it with a hat too. That may have been just a bit too much mustard yellow. I know, I know, that sounds crazy coming from me, but it’s true.
So what started as a scarf then became a shawl and I couldn’t be happier with it. The Bronte Pocket Shawl includes a gorgeous i-cord edge on both long sides and just the right amount of fringe on the short ends. It’s the perfect accessory for staying warm on breezy winter days.
A hat may be coming down the road and maybe even some mittens, but for now you can wrap yourself in the warmth of the Bronte Pocket Shawl.
I’ve included a full video tutorial so you’ll know exactly what to do along the way. I recommend watching it while also following along with the written pattern. I hope you enjoy working on the Bronte as much as you love wearing it.

Blocking:
Steam block shawl and both pockets using a handheld steamer or iron. if using an iron make sure to keep it from touching the yarn or use a light cloth on top as a barrier.
Steam blocking will relax the stitch and keep the edges from curling.
Attaching Pockets:
Try on the shawl and pin pockets in place so that your hands easily fit inside with arms fully extended. Please note that it may be different from the sample shown.
Sew each pocket onto the shawl about 3.5” from each outer edge and at least 4.5” up from the bottom of the shawl. If you’ve made adjustments to the length of the shawl these measurements might be different.
Sew around the sides and bottom edge of the pocket as shown with the blue lines in the diagram. Note that one of the pockets will be sewn “upside down” so that the stitch pattern matches.
*If the cast on edge at the top of the ”upside down” pocket bothers you, use a small crochet hook to surface slip stitch along that edge so it matches the other pocket.
Fringe:
Using the remaining yarn, cut 200 (12”) strands.
Line up four strands and fold in half. Use a crochet hook to draw the folded end through the bottom edge of the shawl from front to back into the first purl section.
Then pull strand ends through the folded loop and pull tight to secure.
Repeat across all purl sections on both sides of the shawl.
See video tutorial for a detailed look.
Steam the fringe so that it lays straight. Using either scissors or if you have them a ruler and rotary cutter, trim the fringe so that it is even all the way across.
Weave in any remaining ends and enjoy!
