It feels like I’ve been waiting forever to release this design. I miraculously finished it up just before the holidays last year, and it was so hard to hold on to it this long. If you love the look of my Gemma Blanket, but don’t know how to knit then your day has finally come.

The Slate Blanket is a beginner friendly pattern and uses basic crochet stitches in contrasting colors to create a stunning design perfect for any home. The black and white totally gives me some David Rose vibes and I love it! It’s a great size too. Perfect for lounging on the couch or throw it on your bed for some extra warmth at night.

Made with the ultra durable Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling it will be sure to last for years to come. Keep scrolling for the free pattern or better yet, head over to Lionbrand.com and pick up the kit! You’ll get all the yarn you need in the colors of your choice, plus a digital copy of the pattern. Seaming:

Using a G 4.25mm crochet hook and color B, join squares using the slip stitch technique. Join all squares in columns first and then go back and join across each row as shown in the chart provided. Squares will alternate direction as you go.

Start by laying two squares side by side so the side of one square is in line with the initial row or ending row of another. Then using the crochet hook,  insert hook from front to back through one loop of the right square closest to the bottom. Then insert the hook front to back through one loop closest to the bottom of the square on the left. Draw color B yarn through both loops leaving a tail at the end.

Repeat the step above again, always inserting the hook from front to back through one loop on the right square and then front to back through one loop on the left square. Then draw color B yarn through all loops on the hook. Repeat all along the squares. Note you will need to skip a few loops on the square where you are working into the rows (or side) since there are fewer stitches than rows in each square. It’s helpful to continue to line up the squares as you go to make sure you are attaching them evenly.

After attaching the first two squares, do not fasten off yarn. Continue to add two squares at a time until that column is complete. Simply line up two more squares and repeat the process. Once you have a total of 14 squares attached (7 in each column), fasten off. Then repeat the process by adding squares along the right side of the blanket in the same manner as before. Once all columns are complete, turn your blanket and use the same technique to attach all rows.

*If having some trouble with the seaming, check out my YouTube video showing how the Gemma Blanket is seamed together using the slip stitch method.

Border:

Using color B yarn and G (4.25mm) crochet hook, attach yarn to one side of the blanket. Ch 1, then sc into same st as join and evenly around the blanket. Work 3 sc into each corner. Sl st to join. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
