I can hardly believe that it’s already the middle of September! Time is just flying by and the holiday season will be here before we know it. That’s why it’s the perfect time to get a head start on all your holiday making. I’ve teamed up with Lion Brand Yarn again this year for their Countdown to Xmas collection. This beautiful collection of knit and crochet patterns is just the thing to get you pumped up and ready for the holidays.

I was thrilled to try out Lion Brand’s Re-spun yarn for this set and it did not disappoint. Made with 100% recycled polyester this yarn is eco-friendly and oh so soft. Plus it comes in so many gorgeous colors, the combinations for the Tobyn hat and scarf are endless!

Using an interlocking shell stitch this hat and scarf set work up quickly which makes it great for gift giving. I love how the colors and stitch combination create a timeless look. The added fringe on the scarf makes it modern and unique. Plus the two row repeat makes this a great mindless project to work on during those cooler winter nights.

I’ve included video tutorials for both the hat and scarf so you’ll know exactly what to do. I suggest following along with the written pattern while you watch the videos.

Pattern:

Scarf

With Color A ch 44

Row 1(RS): sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (43)

Row 2(WS): ch 3 (counts as first st), 2dc in 1st st, sk 2, sc in next st, *sk 2, shell, sk 2, sc, repeat from * until 3 sts remain, sk 2, 3dc in last st, turn.

Change to Color B

Row 3: ch 1, sc in 1st st, *ch 2, dc5tog, ch 2, sc in next st, repeat from * across working the last sc into the top of the ch 3 of the previous row, turn.

Change to Color A

Row 4-141: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 changing color at the end of each row.

Change to Color A

Row 142: ch 1, sc in each st across.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Fringe

Using Color A, cut 128 -17” pieces of yarn. Divide pieces into 16 groups of 8.

Fold groups in half and attach to the ends of the scarf using pull through knots. On the beginning end attach groups on both ends and in the bottom of each shell stitch.

On the ending side attach groups on both ends and in the stitch between each dc5tog.

Once all groups are attached, split the center 6 groups in half. Starting at one side knot together the edge group and half of the next group together. Then knot the unused half and the next half together. Continue in this fashion until you’ve reached the other end making your last knot with the last group and half of the second to last group. Adjust knots so they are in an even line about 1.5” from the edge of the scarf. Trim fringe to finish.

Hat

Band (worked in rows and then joined)

With Color A ch 10

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn. (9)

Row 2: sc BLO in each st across, ch 1, turn. (9)

Rows 3-73: repeat Row 2.

Fold band in half bringing the beginning edge in front of the current row. Then sl st across going through the beginning chains and the BLO of the current row. This will create one large loop or circle.

Do not fasten off. Turn band so RS is facing out and ch 1.

Main Body (worked in joined, turned rounds)

Round 1: sc evenly around the edge of the band, working on sc into the end of each row, sl st to 1st st to join, turn. (73)

Round 2: ch 3, 2dc in same st as join, *sk 2, shell, sk 2, sc in next st, repeat from * around until 3 sts remain, sk 2, 2dc in last st, sl st to top of ch 3 to join.

Change to Color B, turn.

Round 3: ch 1, sc in same st as join, *ch 2, dc5tog, ch 2**, sc in next st, repeat from * around ending last repeat at **, sl st to 1st st to join.

Change to Color A, turn.

Rounds 4-15: Repeat Rounds 2 & 3.

Change to Color A, turn.

Round 16: ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to 1st st to join. (73)

Hat will measure about 9” from bottom of band to top of hat. Add or subtract rows here to adjust the height of hat.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for seaming.

To close the top of the hat fold in half so join is in the center, sew through both sides at the top.

You will have two open circles at the top your hat, bring the center of one circle in and sew through the center and back through the first stitch made, then bring in the center of the second and sew through the center and back through the first stitch made.

Now you will have four open circles, bring the center of each circle into the middle and stitch closed. You will have eight open circles.

One at a time bring the center of each circle into the middle and stitch closed. Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Color A, use a pom pom maker to create a nice round pom for the top of the hat.

Attach to the top of the hat and weave in all remaining ends. To keep your pom removable, simply tie a bow on the inside of the hat.

Now it’s time to enjoy your new hat and scarf set or wrap it up and send it off as a gift! I hope that you love your new Tobyn set as much as I do.

As always you can find a PDF version of these patterns in my shop, Etsy or Ravelry. Or treat yourself to the complete kit from Lion Brand Yarn. You’ll get a digital copy of the pattern plus all the yarn you need in the colors of your choice.

If you make a Tobyn set I’d love to see it! Make sure to tag me @meghanmakesdo on social media and use #thetobynhat and #thetobynscarf so I can share.

Happy Crocheting,

Meghan
