The Vale Beanie-Free Knitting Pattern

The Vale Beanie-Free Knitting Pattern

Get cozy and stylish this winter with a two-color mosaic knit hat pattern. Dive into the world of color work and create a unique accessory to keep you warm.

Say hello to the Vale Beanie knitting pattern! I am obsessed with this stitch and color combo. I first got these two skeins of Local Grown from Lion Brand Yarn back in August and initially I didn’t think they went well together. I used them to do a little review video and after seeing them together more and more I started to wonder what they would look like when used in a finished piece.

I went on the hunt for the perfect stitch and when I found this really easy mosaic knit stitch I knew it was the one. It’s so much fun to make and this color combo has the perfect retro vibes. Now I can’t get enough of it!

I love when I can find stitches that look similar in knit and crochet. I was fortunate enough to come across a crochet stitch that looks very similar and already had four skeins of Local Grown on hand. Thus the Vance and Vale Beanie patterns were born. Whether you knit or crochet you’ll be whipping up a new hat in no time.

Video Tutorial:

Size:

One size: adult

Finished size will be approx. 19” in circumference and 9.5” high after closing.

Gauge:

16 sts X 38 rows = 4” X 4” in pattern stitch. (use rounds 1-4 of the main body for gauge)

Pattern:

With 5mm needles and Color A, CO 84 using the Bulgarian cast on method. There will be one extra stitch from the cast on for a total of 85 before joining.

Make sure all stitches are straight on the needles, then join to the first st by slipping the first st off the left needle to the right purlwise, draw the last st over the slipped stitch and then transfer that stitch back to the left needle.

PM on right needle.

Ribbing:

Rounds 1-7: *K1, P1, repeat from * around, sm. (84)

Get the digital PDF of The Vale Knitting Pattern on Etsy or Ravelry.

Main Body:

Rounds 1-2: K all sts around, sm. (84)

Drop Color A, do not cut off, and change to Color B.

Round 3: *K2, wyib sl1 pw, repeat from * around, sm. (84)

Round 4: *P2, wyib sl1 pw, repeat from * around, sm. (84)

Drop Color B, do not cut off, and change to Color A.

Round 5-6: K all sts around, sm. (84)

Repeat Rounds 3-6 sixteen more times.

BO all stitches with Color A leaving a long tail for closing.

Closing:

To close the hat, fold it in half so the seam is in the center. Thread a tapestry needle onto the end of the tail. Fold hat in half and make one stitch going though both sides in the center. Fold hat in half the other way and make one stitch going through each center side and middle of hat. You will now have four “loops” at the top of your hat. Stitch the middle of each of those “loops” to the center stitch of the hat.

You will now have 8 small “loops” at the top of your hat. Stitch the middle of each of those “loops” to the center stitch of the hat to close. Bring the tail to the inside of the hat and tie and knot. Weave in all ends. Attach a faux fur or yarn pom pom to the top of the hat if desired.
